Six Royals inducted into Hopkins Athletic Hall of Fame

New members were inducted into the Hopkins Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday, May 22 at Hopkins High School. The ceremony recognized the outstanding work and dedication of six Hall of Fame inductees.

“The induction class of 2022 is full of very talented and successful people,” said Dan Johnson, District director of student activities. “We are excited to recognize their many achievements.”

Nine members of the Hopkins staff were also recognized for their distinguished service to the athletic department. View the full list of incredible Royals below.

Hall of Fame Inductees

Shannon Bergstedt
Shannon was a 12-time state champion in high school in cross country, nordic ski and track. She was valedictorian for the class of 2004, a 6-time high school All-American, Athena Award winner and held the state record in the 1600 and 3200 meters. Shannon was part of a Pac-10 All-Academic team while at Stanford and three NCAA championship teams!

Anthony Burke
Anthony was a four-sport letterwinner at Hopkins in football, basketball, track and baseball. He played at the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship and went on to play with the St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL. After his football days ended, Anthony became an avid runner, having completed 53 marathons, qualifying for the Boston Marathon four times.

Brian Cosgriff
Brian was a long-time girls basketball coach at Hopkins from 1999 through the 2019-20 season, he compiled a record of 569-67, winning 19 conference titles, 14 section titles and seven state championships. He was inducted to the Girls Basketball Hall of Fame and the Minnesota High School Basketball Hall of Fame. He was also named the 2019 National Coach of the Year by MaxPreps.

Leslie Knight
Leslie lettered in soccer, basketball and softball at Hopkins. Captain of the basketball team in 2004 when they won the state championship, she played four years at the University of Minnesota, and was named Gopher captain for the 2007-08 season. Leslie was named the University of Minnesota breakout athlete of the year in 2008 and was selected for the Phi Delta Kappa honor society. She played 14 years of professional basketball in Europe!

Vicki Seliger-Swenson
Vicki was head volleyball coach at Hopkins from 1995 to 2020. She won several conference titles in the Classic Lake and Lake Conference, and had four teams advance to the state volleyball tournament. She turned out many collegiate volleyball players, including her daughter, Samantha, who was a 4-year starter and All-American at the University of Minnesota.

John Sherman
John is the first and only media person selected for induction to the Hopkins Hall of Fame. John has been covering and reporting on Hopkins athletics since he graduated from Augsburg College in 1972. Has won over 100 journalism awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association in writing and photography, along with several national press awards. He also coached baseball and basketball in the metro area and was a state champion coach!
