Kemani Williams discovered two big passions during her Hopkins journey that continue to guide her future: music and helping others. Through her experiences in band and support she found along the way, she discovered a path that combines both of the things she loves most.
After graduation, Kemani will attend Augsburg University where she will major in music therapy.
What inspired you to pursue music therapy?
Music therapy was first suggested by someone I know and I didn’t know anything about the field of work. Once I learned more, it seemed like the perfect fit. Music is a big part of my life and I realized that I wanted to use it in a way that could positively impact others.
How has music been part of your journey at Hopkins?
Music and being in band really helped me get through high school. It helped me step outside of my comfort zone and grow in confidence. If I didn’t go to Hopkins High School and meet Ms. Tycast, I wouldn’t be on the path I am now.
What impact do you hope to make through music therapy?
You don’t really hear a lot about music therapy or about many Black people in music therapy. I hope that by pursuing this path, I can help others realize music therapy is meaningful and a possible option for them as well.
What will you miss most about Hopkins?
I will mostly miss all of the fun memories that I had here, and all of the people I got to meet.
